GENERATOR REPAIR
A generator that won't start or throws a fault code strands your off-grid plans and your A/C. I come to the rig and run the real diagnosis — fault codes, fuel, spark, compression — instead of guessing. Onan, Cummins, Onan QuietDiesel, Generac, and Honda are the units I see most in the Central Valley.
What I Repair
Onan, Cummins, Onan QuietDiesel, Generac and Honda RV generators
No-start and fault-code diagnosis (flashing light codes and remote panel codes)
Carburetor cleaning, rebuild and replacement
Fuel pumps, filters and fuel line issues
Starters, starter solenoids and batteries
Control boards and ignition modules
Tune-ups (oil, filter, plug, valve adjustment)
Load testing and surge/rough-run diagnosis
Slip-ring and brush service on low-hour units
Common Problems I See
Crank but no start, or just clicks
Dead start battery, bad starter solenoid, or a fuel pump that quit. I test the start circuit and fuel delivery before recommending parts.
Starts, runs a few seconds, dies (fault code 36/37)
Classic fuel starvation or a failing control board. I check fuel flow and board voltage before swapping parts blindly.
Runs but surges or hunts
Usually a dirty carburetor or lean mixture from varnish after sitting. A carb clean and tune-up fixes most of these.
Flashes a fault code you can't decode
I read the code and trace what it actually means. A code points at a system; it doesn't hand you the broken part.
Won't make full power under load
Slip rings, brushes, or an inverter board issue. I load-test and measure output before quoting.
Sits for months and won't start in the spring
Stale fuel and a gummed carb. A seasonal tune-up and stabilizer keeps it from happening again.
Central Valley–Specific Notes
Generators sit unused through the storage-lot off-season and then get asked to run A/C in 100° heat the first weekend out — that's when they fail. Ag-field dust clogs the generator air filter and cooling intake faster than owners expect, especially on slide-out diesel units. If your rig lives in a storage lot around Manteca or Lathrop, I recommend a spring tune-up before the first trip so you're not stuck at a campground with a no-start. Fuel goes bad in 3–6 months out here.
Can you fix my generator at the storage lot?
Yes. Most generator jobs happen where the RV is parked. If it's in a storage facility, just give me the gate code and access notes — you don't always need to be there.
How much is a generator tune-up?
The prepaid Generator Tune-Up package covers oil, filters, plug, carburetor service, and a load test. You'll see the price before you book. Anything beyond that scope is quoted separately before I do it.
My Onan flashes a code — what does it mean?
There are dozens of codes and they point at a system, not always the broken part. Tell me the code or how many flashes when you book and I'll come ready.
Should I replace my old generator or repair it?
If the block and inverter are healthy, a tune-up or control board is usually far cheaper. If it's burning oil or the inverter's shot, I'll tell you honestly that replacement makes more sense.
